Future of Law

Movement Law Lab is launching a multi-year strategic initiative to discuss and imagine the Future of Law. We think that the current moment presents both an imperative and an opening for public interest lawyers to develop a bold vision for the future of our work, our organizations, and ultimately the law.

As we face a quadruple crisis — a global pandemic; the ensuing economic recession; growing anti-black racism; and the rising threat of authoritarianism — it is exceedingly clear that lawyers have an important role to play in not only protecting the most vulnerable, but building power and a future vision for law with them. Organized people need to collaborate with lawyers to help them face new and complex injustices. Despite this growing need, the vast majority of lawyers are spending their time and resources patching individuals up in a revolving door of crisis. Very few legal organizations are oriented toward, capable of, or skilled at working towards wholesale change to our political and economic systems.

We believe the current moment presents a new opening for the legal profession. Now, more than ever before, lawyers are asking tough questions about themselves and their organizations. Questions of justice and democracy are kitchen table conversations. We think we can reset some norms, culture, and commitments in the legal field — and we can make bigger demands to allow legal institutions to fully flex their muscles for systems change. But making these adjustments will require more coordination, collaboration, and imagination from all of us. This initiative will spark a seminal conversation that will lay the groundwork for the future of law.
